The Netherlands has a long and rich history with regard to the art of clock making. Small family businesses have been manufacturing clocks for centuries. Over the course of time, many Dutch regions had produced their own distinctive type of clock. A perfect example is the so-called Zaandam or Zaanse clocks which were made roughly between 1680 and 1730 in the Zaan region of the Province of North Holland, near Amsterdam. These clocks became immensely popular when the Warmink Company began reproducing them for the masses during the second half of the twentieth century. At around the same time the Warmink family also manufactured Sallander clocks. The name Sallander stems from the Salland region where these clocks were made. The Salland area is located west and north of the present Dutch Province of Overijssel. As a last example of Dutch artistry, we shall mention the Frisian Schippertje clock. Its name is the English word for little skipper. Skippers had these clocks on their boat because they were the smaller version of the large Frisian tail clock and because these type of clocks were able to function well on sea. Like the Zaandam/Zaanse clocks and Sallander clocks, the Frisian Schippertje clocks were manufactured by the renowned Warmink Company during the latter half of the last century. This company, which was founded in 1929 and located in Almelo, marketed under the Wuba brand. Ever since the company closed its doors for good, their clocks have become highly sought-after collectors’ items.
